Happy Hour Podcast Editor

The Happy Hour Podcast is Looking for a Part-time Volunteer Editor

Happy Hour with Em & Jazz is a podcast geared to being a safe space, community and guide for the ‘he’, she’, and theys’ throughout the craziness that is university. Providing advice, tips, and tricks through open conversations and personal stories/experiences at University.

We are looking to bring an editor onto our team for the second season of Happy Hour with Em & Jazz. As an editor, your main duty would be to edit 10, 30-minute episodes bi-weekly. As well there may be a few (no more than five) promo’s/seak peaks we ask you to edit throughout the second season. We also would ask you to attend meetings but will only require you to attend if discussing information related to your specific role as editor. Not required but we would also love for you to join us at the episode recordings, if possible!

 Weekly time commitment:

No more than 5 hours weekly. Episodes are produced bi-weekly so some weeks’ time commitment will be less.

Start & end date:

October 25th, 2021 – March 15th, 2022

Field School to Peru

Are you interested in traveling to Peru, earning credit for two courses and adding strong, international content to your media portfolio and resume? The School of Communication Studies will be offering a field school to Peru in May 2022. There will be two opportunities to learn about the experience in the coming days. There will be an online info session Monday, October 4, 2021, at 6 p.m. just for COMM students.

Kirby Morrow Memorial Scholarship at the Calgary Foundation

The scholarship supports first year undergraduate degree or diploma students studying Theatre, Theatre Arts, Drama, Film, Radio, Television, Animation or Script Writing. Please share this message with your community and with any applicants that may be eligible.

Applicants must:

  • Be an Alberta or British Columbia resident.
  • Be enrolled in first year of an undergraduate degree or diploma program at an Alberta or British Columbia post-secondary institution at the date of the scholarship deadline.
  • Be studying Theatre, Theatre Arts, Drama, Film, Radio, Television, Animation or Script Writing.
  • Submit a video (3 minutes or less) demonstrating their passion for Theatre, Theatre Arts, Drama, Film, Radio, Television, Animation or Script Writing and how this scholarship will help them pursue their dreams.

Lakeview Community Association Volunteer Editor

Your Lakeview Community Association is looking for a superstar volunteer to become the next LCA newsletter editor. Your responsibilities will include the design and layout of the newsletter, ads, and editing content, as well as potentially writing editorial as needed.  Additionally, you will need to coordinate with the LCA Administrator for ad sales, and community association placements and would require a 10-20 hours per month commitment.

A strong working knowledge of Adobe InDesign is ideal, or the ability and willingness to learn new software quickly.  Training will be provided by our outgoing newsletter editor.  This position is required to start in September 2021. The Lakeview News and Views runs for 10 months of the year from September to June.

Paid Journalism Student Research Position

J-Schools Canada/Écoles-J Canada Student Research Assistant Position

J-Schools Canada/Écoles-J Canada is the organization that brings together post-secondary journalism programs in Canada. It seeks to advance and promote the value of journalism at home and abroad through journalism education, scholarship and best practices in Canada and around the world.
JSC/ÉJC is seeking a Student Researcher to help expand its database of Diverse Guest Lecturers. The database, located on the members-only website, lists contact and biographical information of BIPOC media professionals who can speak to journalism classes on a host of topics including race, science, business, courts, sports, arts and culture.
Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Student Researcher will carry out the following tasks:
  • Contact media industry associations and individual journalists, using a list provided by JSC/ÉJC;
  • Invite journalists who are already in the database to update their contact information if necessary;
  • Expand the database with contact information from new entrants;
  • Index and annotate the database to ensure ease of use by JSC/ÉJC members;
  • Meet virtually with the Project Manager and JSC/ÉJC officials as needed.

Volunteer Positions with Street Voices

Street Voices has an exciting volunteer opportunity for aspiring journalists who are looking to enhance their skills through various mediums. Street Voices is a social enterprise that empowers marginalized voices through our technology and media platforms. These platforms include a directory to help people find free services, as well as an online media brand that covers content coming from marginalized communities. We are looking for writers, videographers, photographers, and graphic designers to join the Street Voices Media Team. Recent journalism graduates and/or currently enrolled in a reputable Journalism program are highly preferred. The desired candidate should be able to tell stories of the marginalized communities and youth culture, have a journalistic story lens, and complete most tasks with minimum supervision.
